It is notorious that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a pipe smoker, and he often put his hero character to smoke in front of his readers. The first appearance in a novel dates from 1893 in A Study in Red (Study in Scarlet). A little later, it will be taken up in Le Signe des Quatre (The Sign of Four) in 1894 and finally The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1902.

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Named after the famous fictional detective of the same name, he has been described as the "most famous fictional detective of all time".

The character of Sherlock Holmes appeared in short stories published between 1887 and 1927. A total of 56 short stories and 4 novels were narrated by the character, although only 24 and 25 were written by Doyle himself. Sherlock Holmes was born in 1854 to a country physician, Dr. John Watson MD, who was an army surgeon in the British Army Medical Department. In his early years Watson had a stammer which he later got rid of by learning elocution. He was educated at a boarding school once owned by his mother's family and later attended medical college at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London.[1][2] After graduation he joined the army as a military surgeon and served at the Second Battle of Khartoum, where he witnessed General Charles George Gordon being killed; an event that would stay with him for the rest of his life.[3]
